Ghost Of Tsushima’s Multiplayer Is Narrated By Avatar’s Uncle Iroh

Ghost of Tsushima: Legends players are just starting to get their feet wet today with the launch of the new multiplayer mode. And as soon as the tutorial kicks off, a narrator by the name of Gyozen begins to set the stage with a chic opening cutscene and subsequent tutorial. If that voice sounds particularly familiar, chances are you’re a huge fan of animation too, as the voice actor in question, Greg Baldwin, is also the voice behind Avatar: The Last Airbender and the character of Iroh. of the legend of Korra, as well as Aku. by Samurai Jack. The story is a bit more complicated, as Baldwin himself, as well as the particular inflections he uses in these roles (some of which were carried over for Gyozen) are his efforts to emulate the great Mako Iwamatsu, who died in 2006, and who originally played Aku and Iroh. Mako has had a long and rich career, and it wasn’t until later in his life that he took on the familiar roles in Samurai Jack and Avatar: The Last Airbender. After his death, Greg Baldwin took over those roles and carefully studied the techniques and inflections of the late actor to appropriately honor his work. Gyozen’s new role in Ghost of Tsushima: Legends carries the unmatched tenor and quality of that voice, and certainly made me smile when I began my dive into the beautiful world of Ghost of Tsushima.
