EG separates from LCS head coach Irean Esports Ray

After a disappointing end to the 2020 League of Legends season, Evil Geniuses has decided to quit head coach Heo “Irean” Yeong-cheol. This marks the end of Irean’s second stint with a North American team. EG made a comeback in the LCS at the start of the year by acquiring the place of Echo Fox. The organization also made big splash this offseason, signing Bang, Svenskeren, Zeyzal and Jiizuke. EG also recruited Irean as their head coach after a year with CLG, with the team scoring the LCS by finishing second in the 2020 Spring Split, but failed to overtake FlyQuest in the playoffs. The following season, the team encountered roster cohesion issues that dropped them to sixth in the regular season standings. Once again, they were eliminated in the playoffs, this time by C9. After these disappointing results, it was clear that some changes needed to be made. For the amount of resources that had to be pooled into the coaching staff and EG’s roster, a sixth place finish with an early playoff exit was probably not acceptable to the organization. No roster changes have been confirmed yet, but Irean’s departure could mark the start of bigger changes for the team. There have been a few question marks around the team’s middle lane, for example, with Jiizuke and Goldenglue in attendance – the latter replacing the former during the final weeks of the split. major moves ahead for EG and many NA lists ahead of next year.
